The wind whispers a secret to the dust in tongues I do not understand, and yet the smell on its breath is enough to know – a storm is approaching.
The fires were put out before the sun could sail beyond another millennia of dreams. Lightening glowed distantly and threw itself against a wide desert sky, leaving pinpricks of light to guide a belated moon to rise. Hours of visible darkness stretched on as beetles and lizards awoke to leave stories in the sand; stories that caused stars to shiver and playfully mirror patterns in the sky; stories that deluded sleep.

With a rainbow crawling down their backs, beams of cloud melt unto themselves.
I had never witnessed the sun set on the sea, never seen it gently pull its light away.
From lands I know, the sun and the sea are inseparable. Like many lovers, the end of a weary day calls for their unison to watch a display of light whose fading reveals a patterned course of lost stars. I extend my mind’s eye to watch them embrace tomorrow, where the horizon is the entire sky.

A roundness and fullness of days where each moment peers quizzically at you, wondering how it could be of service; I’ve never had time like I did this past year. To watch seasons turn and the sky rise on the faces of trees as light fills every vein on this earth. That morning light that emits a deep glow as it scales down the tallest of mounds, ever fleeting. I watch not the sun rise, but the land it lights up. Every face is anew in its passing glance of yellow that all too soon becomes a glaring heat laden with shadow. Within it lie reminders of wellbeing and wonder, quickly lost to the ensnaring busyness of the daytime. It may be transient, but remains a part of every hope-filled day.

There is no rain, but dense clouds smear themselves across skies with bated breath and stillness. The elusive sun is displeased, wanting to gaze at Blue Mountains before setting off to witness another day. Deep yellow light swiftly floods through the gray, as we stand with our backs to the sun and watch it skilfully set on pronounced hills in the distance. Shadows begin to dance as two rainbows join frogs and cicadas in a revelling display of light and sound. I slowly wonder where tomorrow might wander as clouds climb inside rooms and form shadows.

Early morning clouds come bounding in to nudge us gently out of bed. They gather, carrying us into the open to view the day. We float onward, and as they disperse, remain dangling in the mist. Looking east, we gape at the apparent moon that perilously balances all its weight on a neighbouring hill. We hadn’t been able to stare at the glare for days, but the sun calmly watches us as the mist begins to clear, trees shake out rain, and we resume searching for foot holes.
Smoke billows rebelliously on the road as the strident afternoon sun teases it forth.

Shivers down the earth’s spine send tremors up the mountains.
Clinging to the sides of a hill seems easier when such waves are secondary, but they still wash over us, enrapturing us with their movements and connecting us to the sea and the world below.
Rivers of grey flow through the heavens as the sun struggles to colour the end of another worrisome day.
