It is difficult to imagine climates without allowing them to surround you. Coming from a sunnier part of the country, it was challenging for me to perceive the cold off people’s experiences of it. I had to immerse myself in it, feel it, in order to know it. The Swedish volunteers might have lived their entire lives knowing snow and such weather, but the cold seemed to equally catch them off guard. Here, in the villages and towns of these hills, heating systems are not assumed, but considered a luxury. It seemed as if, for the first time, they too were truly experiencing 13 degree weather coupled with the returning rains.
